July 1942.

In bombed-blitzed London, nightclub singer Kate Watson has found somewhere to belong, far from the village that cast her out. Then her estranged sister asks for a favour: come home for one month to care for her little girl, Lizzy.

Back in Little Worthy, the gossip is as cruel as ever. Kate intends to keep her distance, but between ARP shifts and fundraising for the war effort, Lizzy’s affection begins to break through her defences. So does an unlikely friendship with Thomas Rees, the new vicar, who carries his own wounds from Dunkirk.

While Kate struggles to trust again, her sister Sarah prepares for a secret mission in hopes of finding her missing husband. Joining the Special Operations Executive takes her behind enemy lines in France, where one mistake could cost her any chance of coming home.

With a child depending on her and an unexpected love taking root, will Kate risk her heart—or let yesterday’s whispers steal her future?

An emotional Second World War family saga of sisterhood, secrets and wartime romance. Milly Adams brings together the courage of women on the home front and the peril of occupied France in a story of belonging and hope. Perfect for fans of Lizzie Lane and Lesley Eames.
