Interview Melissa Addey on her new Novel

What is your book A String of Silver Beads about?

It follows the story of a young Moroccan woman in medieval Morocco who craves freedom and adventure. She is forbidden to race her camel or to travel the trade routes, so instead she marries a warrior who is creating a new empire across North Africa and most of Spain, thinking that this will lead to a life of adventure. But he has a powerful queen, which leads to a bitter rivalry and difficult choices ahead.

How did you come up with the idea for this book?

I was in Morocco on holiday and the guidebook I had talked about Berber jewellery, which is very beautiful and highly symbolic, for example it is given at certain stages of your life. I thought, wouldn’t it be interesting to have a novel where each chapter is one item of jewellery given to a woman as she moves through her life  - and then I found a moment in Morocco’s history where a Muslim warrior named Yusuf bin Tashfin united the whole of North Africa and a large part of Spain under his rule, creating a new empire. He was an interesting man and had a very powerful queen, Zaynab, at his side, who bore him many children. But he gave his empire to his son with a Christian slave girl which I found an odd choice, so I started weaving a story around these facts and ended up creating a series told through the eyes of four different women which tells what happened.

Is there a reason why you chose 11th century North Africa of all places?

The rise of an empire is an interesting moment and Yusuf was an oddly peaceful man, for someone who spent a lot of time in battles. The settings are beautiful and there were some very powerful characters to work with. When I first approached publishers, they said no-one has ever heard of that time and place… exactly! That’s what makes it fascinating to my readers, they often say they knew nothing of that period of history but have found it really interesting to read about. And a few readers who have lived in or come from Morocco have told me it feels really authentic, which is lovely to hear.

How did you get into writing?

I did not have a TV as a child and spent a lot of time reading – I read very fast and loved mythology from all over the world. I think all the stories went in and new ones came back out again! I wrote a few children’s stories in my twenties and then took that trip to Morocco…

What does writing mean to you?

It is a wonderful creative outlet and I am always very touched when I read my reviews to discover what my writing has meant to other people.

What tips would you give to aspiring authors?

Read a lot because it will teach you storytelling. Keep writing steadily, your writing will improve all the time. If you want to be a fulltime author, think like an entrepreneur – you will need to market your books and reach out to readers – which is fun!

Can you make a living from writing?

I am very fortunate to be able to write full time.

Of all the books you've written, what is your favourite?

I have a soft spot for this novel of course, because it was my very first historical novel and it brings back happy memories of my visit to Morocco. I also like the other books in the Moroccan Empire series because each one is a different perspective on the same Or overlapping) events and it was a challenge every time to sit down and change to the mindset of a different character and try to see the world through their eyes.

What message do you want A String of Silver Beads to convey?

Perhaps to have courage – when you know who you are and what you want, stick to it, don’t let other people change your direction.

What do you like least about being a writer?

Probably checking for typos! I read very fast so I read slowly out loud to try and catch the last ones.
