What’s your name and what do you write?
I’m Abby North, and I write spicy contemporary romance with plenty of heart.
Are you a fast writer or a patient perfectionist?
Both! I always find the first few chapters are where I make a million revisions, then as the characters develop more and more, I leave the revisions behind and get the voices on the page as fast as they speak in my head. I love it when I hit that stride, it’s all consuming!
How did the idea for your book come about? Was there a lightbulb moment?
A Bruno Marrs song triggered a scene for Ariana, and over the next few days the whole story grew and morphed in my head. It was crazy, i’d never written anything before and I had no idea that characters and their story could be so insistent and consuming.
How much of yourself is in your book or your characters?
I think the characters are all very individual, but I think any author would be lying if they didn’t admit that there’s something of themself in their characters. Be it their reactions or thought processes or even something simple such as how they take their coffee or what flowers are their favorite. None of my character are based on me, but there’s a little of me in all of them.
What does your typical writing day look like (if such a thing exists)?
There’s no typical day in my house! I write when I can, but that usually isn’t in the morning. House‘ jobs always get done first so I can start writing without thinking that i have to clean the bathroom or mop the floors.
Were there characters that surprised you or took on a life of their own?
Yes! Spike. He was never supposed to get his own book. I never thought too much about his character until it started coming through on the pages and I knew I couldn’t end his and Lottie’s story there.
