Quirky small towns, endearing characters and a gripping crime mystery with a touch of magic: a successful paranormal cosy crime novel combines classic ‘whodunnit’ suspense with a warm, feel-good atmosphere. The genre thrives on charming characters, mysterious communities and supernatural elements, without ever becoming dark or brutal.

Paranormal cosy crime is one of the most exciting developments in the cosy genre and enjoys great popularity, particularly in the English-speaking world. The blend of a classic detective case, funny dialogue and a magical world creates stories that both entertain and enchant you. We’ve already explained in detail in another article how to write a cosy crime. This time, however, we’re focusing on paranormal stories.

Typical of the genre is a small, close-knit town—often set in the US or the UK—where everyone knows everyone and a new mystery lurks around every corner. Amidst witches, wizards, ghosts and other paranormal beings, a vibrant community emerges with its very own rules, intrigues and quirks.

The heart of the story

The focus is usually on a likeable protagonist who uses her special abilities to solve mysterious crimes. The emphasis isn’t on action or violence, but on a cleverly constructed case, original characters and the joy of solving the mystery alongside the protagonist. Humour, quirky supporting characters and a cosy atmosphere provide the perfect antidote to the murder mystery.

Many successful series add some other ingredients to this mix, such as a slow-burn romance, a small bookshop, a café or an antique shop as a haven of comfort, or even an animal companion that sometimes has magical powers of its own. Such recurring settings and characters create the ideal foundation for series in which each volume tells a new crime story.

Use tropes to make your story gripping

Even well-known tropes have their place in paranormal cosy crime. These include, amongst others, ‘whodunnit’, ‘female detective’, ‘found family’, ‘chosen one’, ‘clear my name’, ‘locked room’, ‘missing person’ and ‘enemies to lovers’. However, balance is always key: the magical elements enrich the plot without overshadowing the crime, and despite murder and secrets, the overall tone remains light, fun and cosy.

It is precisely this combination of suspense, magic and a feel-good atmosphere that makes paranormal cosy crime a genre that keeps readers coming back to the same world time and again, in search of the next mystery, the characters they’ve grown to love and another touch of magic.
