10 tips on how to structure your everyday life around writing April 20, 2026
Writing can be lonely. That's just what it's like. You begin, lose yourself in your sentences, the plot – for hours at a time. Alone. That's why it's so important for you to make yourself comfortable and avoid some pitfalls…
Here are our 10 helpful tips for writing at home:
#1 Do not write wearing joggers or pyjamas. Get up and get ready like you have an appointment or need to go to the office. You may not believe it at first, but you'll definitely be more productive! Because it helps give writing more of a serious edge.
#2 Writing is your business. You need good schedules, a plan what to do at what time, and to take your writing seriously. It's how you make money, so that should be obvious, just like for everyone else.
#3 Look for a good spot to write, a real work station. Make it look nice and inviting and make sure you can be productive there – you are at liberty to do whatever you like, since the spot is at your home. Make the best of it. Remember: You need a lot of light, natural is best.
#4 Yes, it pays off to buy a good office chair. You spend quite a lot of time sitting on it, so it should be comfortable and allow you to sit properly. Yes, they're expensive, but it's sure to be worth it!
#5 You should leave the house at least once a day (no matter the weather!). Go for a walk, stretch your legs, get some fresh air. That'll give you some more headspace, more energy and will refresh you.
#6 Do not disturb: Make sure to not let social media and your phone (use your voicemail) distract you! Schedule one hour a day to post on your account, see what is happening outside, read your emails and reply to the important ones. Leave the less important ones for the afternoon or evening.
#7 Find out what time of day you work best at (i.e. you are most productive at). Take this time to exclusively get some writing done! Schedule other activities for other times in the day and don't forget your breaks! They should also get a regular spot in your daily routine. Use a calendar and a to-do list. That's the best way to get your priorities straight, stick to them and not forget anything.
#8 Stay in touch with the outside world. Write to your readers, marketing partners, publishers, agencies, etc. However: don't just let your friends come round to your place unannounced during your best writing hours! Stick to your daily schedule and make an effort to be strict about it.
#9 Have you thought about using a virtual assistant? They can be quickly trained, are reliable and cheap. There must be things to do that you don't enjoy and take away from your valuable writing hours, right? Well then – hand them off so you don't need to think about it anymore and nothing gets in your way.
#10 Enjoy your freedom! Be your own boss and organise your day in a way that's best for you. Break your own rules once in a while – there's no one to ask permission from! That will give you a good feeling that is sure to guide you through the day in the life of an author.
